Moving Rocks of Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, California
05/07/12 at 04:59:16

Unsolved Mystery: How do the Sailing Stones of California's Death Valley move? No one is certain since no human being on record has ever actually seen the stones move. But move they do, as the trails they leave behind clearly demonstrate.

I think they only move during infrequent rainstorms. The lake bed they are in is just dried mud, and a quick downpour will turn the surface into a type of watery clay called slip. Once the stones are on this slippery surface it only takes a strong wind to blow them some distance in one go - just like curling stones on ice.
As the mud is only 1/2" thick it will leave a little track behind it and build up at the edges.

That's my view anyway.  Cheesy
