Nuclear-Powered USS Enterprise On Final Voyage
04/06/12 at 02:51:36

-- The USS Enterprise is the U.S. Navy's oldest-serving ship. Commissioned in 1961, she became the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. At 1,123 ft (342 meters) long, the "Big E" remains the world's longest naval vessel and the 11th-heaviest "supercarrier."

The USS Enterprise is an operational piece of history, having been first deployed during the Cuban Missile crisis in 1961. She also performed a pivotal role in recent conflicts, such as Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. On Nov. 25, 2011, she celebrated her 50th anniversary.

The USS Enterprise is now on her 22nd and final deployment, as shown in these photographs. On return to port later this year, the 8th ship in the Fleet to bear the name "USS Enterprise" will be deactivated.
