What is Brainwave Entrainment

What is Brainwave Entrainment

Brainwave entrainment is a simple concept but a lot of people don't know much about it or have never even heard of it, never mind the huge benefits it can bring.

Our brain is operating a certain frequencies throughout the day and change when we are resting, sleeping, actively involved in something or in deep concentration. What brainwave entrainment, or binaural beats, attempts to do is change the brainwave frequency. To do this, two tones of different frequencies are played at the same time which produces a third tone. For example if you play a 300Hz tone in the left ear and a 310Hz frequency in the right ear it will produce a tone of 10Hz, which is the frequency for taking you to a relaxed but focused state of mind.

You might be asking why do you not just play a 10Hz frequency to begin with. Well, we humans cannot hear below 20Hz, our range is from about 20Hz to 20,000Hz. The frequencies that we look to induce, in sleep for example, is about 4Hz - 8Hz which is the Theta stage so the human ear would not be able to detect this frequency if it was played direct. This is why two tones are played at the same time to produce the desired tone

Brainwave states

There are four main brainwave states:

Delta - Operating at around 0.5Hz - 4Hz - Usually seen in deep sleep or deep meditative states
Theta - Operating at around 4Hz - 8Hz - usually this is the beginning stages of sleep and drowsiness
Alpha - Operating at around 8Hz - 14Hz - This is seen when the body is relaxed but still alert
Beta - Operating at around 14Hz - 30Hz - This is when we are alert and focused.

Benefits of binaural beats

Brainwave entrainment will deliberately produce the tones we require for a healthier lie. For example if someone is looking to meditate quickly and get down to deep meditative states they can use binaural beats to induce a deep delta stage of brainwave activity. This way a meditator can meditate for 20 minutes and know every time that they will reach a deep meditative state every time. The benefits of this are that the body is getting the required reparation time it needs as it does in sleep. People who use mediation in their every day lives have been shown to be healthier both physically and mentally and need less sleep as their bodies get a blast of, effectively, deep sleep when they use a delta binaural bat program.

There are many benefits to binaural beats and further articles will explain this in more depth.

How Binaural Beats Have Shaped My Life

How Binaural Beats Have Shaped My Life

It's hard to convey how binaural beats work without actually listening to them yourself so I am going to give you my story on how binaural beats have helped shape my life. I first discovered binaural beats back in 1996 when I heard a CD I borrowed from a friend. I had a lot going in my life at that time and was looking for a way to relax. I had tried meditation and had even gone to the introductory lesson on transcendental meditation, that's how committed I was to learning to relax more. I didn't sign up for the full classes for TM as I thought it was a bit of a rip off and I didn't really bond with the instructor. So I tried these binaural beats as a way to relax. I was also smoking hash quite a bit as a way to relax and as a way to altered states of mind, but found I couldn't really function when smoking hash although I liked the altered states I would go into with hash.

Within a few days I was starting to notice a marked difference in my ability to stay calm in stressful situations. I also noticed I was getting a better nights sleep and was more refreshed in the mornings. I listened to the CD in the morning and again in the evening. I began cutting down on the amount I was smoking.

I then had the confidence to sign up for a degree course in psychology in 2007.

I listened to them for a few months and I was feeling great, my confidence was very high, my demeanor had changed from a bit manic to calm and relaxed and friends and family were starting to notice. I had stopped listening to the CD and was still smoking hash when it became apparent that I would not finish the course if I continued smoking and looked again at binaural beats as a way to relax and stop smoking hash altogether. I stopped smoking around late 1998 and used binaural beats as a way to reach altered states and go to that creative place in my mind to write my essays for the degree course.

It was around this time I became interested in Lucid dreaming and astral projection and found out as much as I could about the brainwave patterns of lucid dreamers. I even wrote a paper on lucid dreaming as part of my degree in psychology. I found out the brainwave patterns of lucid dreamers and wanted to emulate them so I could have lucid dreams myself. It was binaural beats that was to help me have my first lucid dream and all my subsequent lucid dreams. I remember the feeling of exhilaration after my first lucid dream and I loved it and practiced lucid dreaming with the help of binaural beats for a few years. I then tried Astral projection and had a few out of body experiences but nothing to write home about.

Fast forward a few years and I had stopped using binaural beats as my life was going well although I was still interested in them from an academic point of view and still did a lot of research. I had gained my degree and had been bitten by the research bug, I love doing research.

In 2005 I came back to binaural beats after having found some great downloads and some great software to create my own binaural sounds. I experimented for a few years and eventually had a great collection of downloads which I used for myself to help with relaxation, creativity, energy and to help me study. I gave a loan of my creations to a few friends and family and they loved them and advised I should market them. I never did but continue to used them myself and give them out.

Then in 2007 I bought a few downloads from the net and was shocked at the bad quality of binaural beats that were out there, it was very hit and miss whether I was going to get a good one or not. That's when I decided to market my own creations and 2008 has seen me release 3 products with more on the way.

Although I have used binaural beats for relaxation, creativity, energy, lucid dreaming and astral projection there is a multitude of things they can be used for.
